R.O.A.R. Squad: Rachel and her dog, Winston

The good, the bad... and the incredibly cute.

A warm welcome to Rachel and her beautiful pup, Winston! I absolutely love the name “Winston,” by the way. Love it!

Winston was recently diagnosed with cancer. It’s in the early stages and prognosis is good- let’s send lots of positive, healing vibes Winston and Rachel’s way. Lots of warmth to you both, it is wonderful to have you part of the R.O.A.R. Squad!

The Human: Rachel. Check out her blog, The Rachel Chronicles, and read all about Winston’s adoption story.

The Cowboy: Winston (4 1/2 year old American Bulldog) who Rachel found through Petfinder.com

Social Butterfly: When I first adopted Winston, I was concerned that people would be wary of him because of how big he was going to get (and people’s prejudices about certain breeds).  Therefore, I made a distinct effort to ensure that he was well socialized with both people and other dogs.  Sometimes, I think I did my job a little too well, as Winston now believes everyone he meets is just a new friend waiting to happen.  And I needn’t have worried about people being afraid of him.  There’s just something about Winston that attracts people.  Wherever we go, people just want to meet him.  And he’s more than happy to meet them!

Handsome devil.

Winston! Winston! When we walk in the mornings, the kids at the bus stop see him coming, and I hear a chorus of “Winston’s coming!  Winston’s coming!”  Then they all line up to pet him as he walks past.  During our evening walks, our neighbors will stop on their way home to give Winston a pat from the car window.

Chick Magnet: He especially loves going through the Chik-Fil-A drive thru because they give him chicken nuggets!

Where: West Virginia

  1. Winston is absolutely adorable; we love American Bulldogs. I especially like that first cowboy outfit. How funny is that?

  2. Rachel says:

Absolutely love the post! And if I do say so myself, Winston does look rather handsome in those pictures! However, he now believes he’s famous and is demanding that I treat him with the respect due his celebrity status …

  3. Kari says:

I love me a cow dog 🙂 Its so cute that the kids get all excited to see him

  4. Maggie says:

Oh my gosh! What a handsome boy!! Rachel, we need to TALK! It sounds like Winston and Emmett are long-lost brothers with their friendly, kid-loving ways! Emmett, too, faced cancer. We just hit the one-year cancer-free mark, and while it was incredibly tough, it was harder on me than it was on him (in hindsight). I’m heading over to your blog now, but if you ever want to chat about canine cancer, hit me up! Oh, and where on earth did you get that cowboy costume?!? I think Emmett *needs* one!

  5. Mel says:

Oh wow. Winston is such a handsome boy. Kudos to you Rachel for giving him a home and helping people to see him as a wonderful and loving dog. It’s nice to hear a great story like yours!

  6. Trude says:

What a cutie!! Love pet owners who go out of their way to make sure their pet is socialized. It’s the best for everyone! And Winston is a fantastic name. 🙂

  7. @Trude- Yes, I love the name Winston too! 🙂

  8. Kim Clune says:

I’m doing some catch-up on my R.O.A.R. Squad news and, OMG, Winston is just the cutest dog – EVER. It’s that FACE. I just want to kiss it!

How are things going with the cancer treatment? Glad to read on your blog that it hadn’t entered his lymph system. I hope he’s doing well. We found that our dog fared far better than people do and lived to 14.

All the best to you, Rachel, and to Winston!
