R.O.A.R. Squad: Amy and Eric and their dogs, Cabo Wabo and Bugzee Isabelle

A great big welcome to the latest members of the R.O.A.R. Squad: Amy and Eric from Michigan! Cabo Wabo and Bugzee Isabelle (best names ever) joined their family before they entered the “system”- it never ceases to surprise and sadden me just how many strays are out there wandering about alone… but there are two less now!

Learn more about the Altschul family and how you can become a R.O.A.R. Squad member with your rescue pet (cat, dog, llama, whatever!) after the jump!

Rockin’ Rescue Owners: Amy and Eric Altschul

Gorgeous Pups: Cabo Wabo (Chihuahua mix) and Bugzee Isabelle (Terrier mix)

Must Love Dogs: My husband and I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have spent 10 wonderful years of marriage together. My husband works in heating and cooling as counter sales and I am a supervisor for the data entry department at a medical billing company. When Eric and I met in 1996 we both realized that our love for dogs was the first thing we found in common. At the time, Eric owned a year old white German Shepherd dog named Wolfee. Sadly, we lost Wolfee in January 2006 due to bone cancer however, not before we were able to give him a Chihuahua mix little brother. Shortly after Wolfee passed we located a reputable breeder and purchased a black German Shepherd dog that we named Vader. This finally led to a phone call from a co-worker asking me to help her find a home for a small Terrier mix female that had found her way to my co-workers porch. I am a firm believer in rescues when it comes to finding a furr-ever friend however, my practice has been to acquire the rescue before he/she finds themselves in a shelter. My experience is that so many rescues do not make it beyond the shelter due to health or aggression issues. Both of my rescues came to us before they entered the “system.”

Destined to be a Ladies Man: Cabo Wabo, along with his two sisters and mother were found living in a hole in a Muskegon, Michigan field at the tender age of four weeks. I fell in love with the little boy and found homes for his remaining family members. I am happy to report that these homes have been forever homes. With CaboWabo I was able to feed him specialized formula until he was ready for solid foods. Cabo Wabo is now seven years old and has become quite the ladies man.

Something to Wag About: You have never met a happier little girl than Bugzee. Her tail wags constantly, which was ironic because she had so many health issues when I took her in that there would be no way a human would be that happy. Upon veterinary inspection Bugzee was found to have an incisor that was rotting out of her mouth, hip dysplasia due to some past trauma, severe malnutrition and (the icing on the cake) heartworm! Now you can see why I was confused with the tail wagging. After much love, patience and (of course) money I am exhilarated to report that Bugzee is now a very healthy girl at five years old. Bugzee has been with us now for about 18 months and her tail has not stopped since.

We Agree with Pet-Agree: My sister-in-law Diane, owner of Pet-Agree, LLC dog walking and pet sitting in Grand Rapids, Michigan made me promise to send this information to you. I also want to note that she has had a hand in both the rescues that I own. Cabo Wabo and family were caught by her and she went with me to bring home Bugzee Isabelle. Her company promotes dog rescues every chance they get.

any dog named after tequila is a dog after my heart

The resilience of dogs is amazing, isn’t it? Us humans are wusses in comparison.

Once again, beautiful angels in the form of human beings! I used to live in Marquette, MI – not far from Grand Rapids – so I know how absolutely cold it gets. And, wherever there is hard weather my mind and heart always goes to the helpless, homeless animals that are out there trying to brave the elements and I pray that someone finds them. They are both so adorable and very fortunate.

  4. Love the names, and the expressive eyes.

  5. @Kim- I’m very glad they found such a great home!

  6. @Two- The names *are* pretty fab 🙂
