R.O.A.R. Squad: Julie and Scott and their dog, Cuda

Okay you guys, prepare to fall head over heels in love.

I am very pleased to introduce our latest R.O.A.R. Squad members, Julie and Scott and their dog Cuda!

Cuda has several physical challenges as a product of over breeding and inbreeding. Julie speaks out against inbreeding and states, “Over breeding and inbreeding dogs is unnecessary and cruel and I find that [Cuda] has become an educational icon to teach kids- and grown-ups- about it.”

Read more about how you can support this pup (called Cuda, as in “Baracuda,” because of her charming underbite) after the jump!

If you would like to be profiled in the R.O.A.R. Squad all the info you need to do so is HERE. A special shout out to fabulous folks in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming and the Yukon– we need you!

Rockin’ Rescue Owners: Julie and Scott LeRoy

Gorgeous Pup: Cuda- she is a one year old American Pit Bull (check out her page on PeoplePets and dogtime).

Saint Scott: My husband is a saint because he has tolerated me bringing home dogs since we’ve met! Scott loves our pets and they love him.  We don’t have a family website, but I blog about Cuda at Cuda the Deformed Pitbull (help get Cuda to the Ugliest Dog Contest in June 2011 by checking our her Facebook page!).

Pit Stop: Long story short, I came upon Cuda one day after work as an animal control officer.  A couple at a gas station told me they needed to find a home for a puppy they had rescued.  I didn’t learn the circumstances about her rescue but I knew I had to take her.  I texted my husband and I kept texting him until he texted back, “OK!”

A Face Everyone Could Love!: Cuda was even more shy than she is now, was so small and was very deformed- curved spine, fused neck, tilted rib cage, hocked rear legs, flat feet and huge underbite.  We have fallen in love with her- everyone’s first reaction to her is to recoil but then they also fall in love.

Glug: Cuda is easily scared but my favorite thing is the self watering bowl.  She is so timid around the “glug… glug…” that she stretches out as far as she can, sips, backs up and repeats until done. If she gets glugged, she’s outta there!

Where: Durham, North Carolina

  1. Mom says there is something special in her eyes. A knowing depth that expresses her understanding and gentle acceptance of her fortunes and misfortunes. Another great find and a spectacular R.O.A.R. Squad Member, Shauna!

  2. Actually, she is a very pretty little girl =)

  3. Pup Fan says:

    Cuda looks like such a sweetheart! I agree with Miss PishPosh… there’s just something in her eyes. She looks so lovable!

  4. We have been following Cuda on her Facebook page and website. We love her and it’s great hearing more about her background; they make a great family.

  5. @Miss- I think she knows too- she’s beautiful 🙂

    @Cristol- I completely agree!

    @Pup- I know, I want to hug her 🙂

    @Two- I am going to be checking them out regularly now too- such a great family!

  6. Kristine says:

    Ugly? Hardly! She looks like a sweetie-pie. That top photo of the two of them is the cutest thing I have seen in a long time. They sound like such an awesome family. I am so glad you found them!

  8. Cuda is gorgeous. You’re lucky to have found each other 🙂

  9. Kim says:

    Love that photo of them both! Julie has a tough job as an animal control officer. I would love to speak with her because she doesn’t sound like the ones I’ve come across in my life. In any event, Cuda is adorable and I agree with Julie about the breeding issue 100%. So, yet another Angel walking the earth added to the R.O.A.R. Squad 🙂

  10. @Kristine- I’m so glad too! We were introduced via Twitter- crazy thing this social media 😉

    @Kari- Me too 🙂

    @Lorie- I think so too!

    @Kim- It is really great that she taking a stand and speaking out about inbreeding/over breeding. These are the very real consequences…

  11. Julie LeRoy says:

    Thank you all for the kind words. Cuda does have the most beautiful eyes and I think her permanent smile has something to do with it..she can’t look mad no matter what. Kim- animal control officers do come across as difficult in many situations. It’s because we come across so many things we cannot fix due to the law or other reasons. We get singled out because the public thinks we enjoy catching helpless dogs or allowing dogs to be abused and nothing can be further from the truth. We can only speak in ordinances and facts. Behind the scenes we cry and hurt over what we see just like “regular” people.

    We love all of our friends we’ve made during this adventure!

  12. @Julie- We are so happy to have you guys part of the Squad- you’re real inspirations 🙂

  13. So glad to see Cuda on the ROAR squad.

    You have such an amazing blog Shauna. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent and touch so many hearts.

  14. Mel says:

    Awww!!!! How sweet! Cuda is a lucky girl to have found someone who loves her for her and not for her looks – although she really is adorable! I loved the story about her water fountain. That’s hilarious!

    Welcome to the R.O.A.R. club Julie, Scott and Cuda!

  15. Heather says:

    I am of the opinion that pups who are a little different are just that much better. We love them because of their ‘flaws’ not despite them. I think Cuda is adorable. Welcome to the Squad!
