R.O.A.R. Squad: Nicole and her dogs, Blue and Wyette

Nicole with one of her rescue dogs, Blue

I am thrilled to introduce you to the R.O.A.R. Squad’s latest member, Nicole Spencer, President of the Northwest Territories SPCA.

On Tuesday, January 25, 2011 (2 days ago!) the Northwest Territories (NWT) SPCA found out some very exciting news: They are a winner of the Aviva Community Fund and they will use funds raised to build a much needed shelter! Congratulations you guys! If you would like to donate you can do so HERE.

From their winning entry:

The NWT SPCA does not have a shelter. Animal neglect and abuse is unfortunately a very real and pressing issue in the North. All too often, unwanted pets are abandoned in the extreme climates of our northern communities to suffer and die horrific deaths. The shooting of stray dogs to curb the overpopulation is an reality in these communities. Due to a lack of adequate facilities to help counter these great injustices, disease and free roaming dogs are a huge health and safety issue. We get several calls every month from concerned citizens all over the NWT, looking for help. They see starving, abandoned and freezing dogs in their communities and have little to no means with which to help. Without a Shelter, we cannot provide an effective solution.

The work Nicole and her volunteer team do is incredible. Like so many shelter and rescue organizations, they are in constant need of foster families, they lead several programs to encourage adoption including spay and neuter rebate and loan programs, and they sponsor a NWT SPCA Scholarship for high school graduates dedicated to the betterment of animals.

Rockin’ Rescue Owner: Nicole Spencer (Nicole is the President of the Northwest Territories SPCA)

Gorgeous Pups: Blue is a 7 year old beagle cross, and Wyette (a female) is a 2 year old pitbull cross

Blue No More: Blue came from Newfoundland at a foster organization called Heavenly Creatures. He was passed around from 4 houses before I got him.  They said he was bad but he is the best dog I ever had… right from the start. I guess he just didn’t have the right mom.

World Traveller: Blue likes to sit pretty when he wants something and loves food (especially cheese and pepperoni) more than life itself.  He travelled with me to Yellowknife from St. John’s, Newfoundland (eastcoast of Canada) 3 years ago. He has been my best friend through lonely and heartbreaking times. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. He’s worth a million dollars to me.

Love at First Sight: Wyette is two and was rescued from northern Saskatchewan.  Many of her litter mates (13 in all) were shot.  The family that I got her from saved her life.  They had her for a few months and then looked for a new home for her.  Before I even met her I said I would take her, just from a picture I saw.  They drove her here from Saskatchewan and I picked her up.

Meercat Manor: Wyette likes to stay within her comfort zone which is around us and in our home and property.  Any strangers are not really welcome until she really gets to know them.  She has trust issues.  However she is the most affection and loving dog I have ever met.  The funniest thing about Wyette is she smiles like a meercat, honest to God she does!

Whole Family: We also have two Mastiffs, a Japanese Tosa and a young Cane Corso.

Where: Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (formerly of Newfoundland & Labrador)
