I am very pleased to introduce you to our latest R.O.A.R. Squad members: Cherie and Jeff from Utah! And guess what: Their rescue dog Mattie is a T.V. and movie actress! Learn more about this talented and photogenic team after the jump!
If you would like to be profiled in the R.O.A.R. Squad (Rescue Owners Are Rockin!) all the info you need to do so is HERE. A special shout out to fabulous folks in South Dakota, Wyoming and the Yukon– we need you!
Gorgeous Pup: Mattie is a yellow lab mix, and she is about six years old (we’ve had her 4 and a half years). Mattie is a wonderful family pet, best friend and also a talented T.V. and movie actress!
Through the Chain-Link: My husband and I went to the Humane Society of Utah to find a shelter dog to adopt for a family pet. We looked at several other dogs, then saw Mattie pleading with us (through the chain-link) to take her home. She didn’t even look full grown but had udders having just weaned puppies before she was an owner turn-in.
She Tugged at Our Hearts: Her beautiful smile and her desperation tugged at our hearts… until we read “Not Housebroken”…. which we sadly agreed was a deal-breaker for our situation at the time (we worried she could be a habitual house-pee-er and that may have been the reason she was abandoned at the shelter). The other dogs we looked at didn’t seem as personable, so we left.
Meant to Be: Mattie’s sweet face haunted me as we drove home – dogless, and I prayed “Dear God, please let that little yellow lab mama get a great home.” A few days later, I called the Humane Society and asked if they had any new dogs available. The person I talked with said “I have a beautiful little yellow lab in foster care at my house” and she described “Mattie,” udders and all. I said “But that one’s not housetrained, right?” and the woman said “She’s doing fine so far today!” My husband agreed that we should go and adopt Mattie and hope for the best.
All Smiles: That very first night, at our house, as we gave Mattie all our love, I could actual see she had a smile (see UNretouched photo “Smile”). Although Mattie was happy to have a loving home, for the first few weeks we had her, she was timid, afraid of men and also very fearful of being left alone. Over time, her confidence and security built up and now she’s a happy, well-adjusted dog. We did have a few housetraining “incidents” at first, but it worked out in a few weeks – yay!
Ready For Her Close-Up: Since Mattie and I spend so many hours together, it is a fun hobby to train her. She is very smart and she has been in several films, a commercial and a tv pilot. Mattie loves going to “work” because she spends the whole day right by me, gets lots and lots of treats, and lots of attention on set. I make sure she gets plenty of rest and play too.
She’s a Natural: Mattie got into TV and movies because I tried being an “extra” in High School Musical 3 (which was filmed here) – just for fun, and loved the experience, but missed my dog in the long hours on set! So, I thought, since I like to teach Mattie tricks, maybe she could work “with” me on set!
A Star is Born: Mattie’s first gig was as “Lucky” in Canyon Rangers (by The Fremantle Corporation), a search and rescue pilot for TV. She was one of the main characters, a hero dog, best friend to the boy who the story is about.
I Love Diane Keaton! Mattie recently worked as a “dog walking in the park” this summer in My Darling Companion, a movie with Diane Keaton and Kevin Cline.
A Part of the Family: Most of all though, Mattie is a well-loved part of our family and my sweet and loyal friend. Over Christmas, I had the flu and Mattie wouldn’t leave my side day and night. I love her so much! Our family needed Mattie at least as much as she needed us!
