A Very Patient Muse: We started getting dogs in 2006. It was around then that I bought a DSLR and started relearning everything that I’d forgotten about photography since university. Chopper was a very patient muse. Photographing dogs became my passion and I set up Ruthless Photos in 2009. As we own powerful dogs we need strong collars and leads for them. I couldn’t find anything I liked in Australia so I started learning leathercraft. Shortly after launching my photography website I launched Ruthless Leather also. Dave’s background is cabinetmaking though so he’s much neater than me. He now does all the crafting and I do the design, marketing, paperwork, etc. We’re both Leos, but somehow we manage to work together and not kill each other!
Dig Deep: Our first dog was Ivan the 7yo Husky who we inherited from my cousin. He wasn’t used to being home alone during the day so he cried a lot and kept trying to escape. Three months after we got him we got Angel from Staffy Rescue to keep him company. They made a surprisingly good pair. He pretended to find her annoying, but deep down we knew he always had a soft spot for her!
Pain in the Ass, Love in the Heart: We kept in touch with Staffy Rescue and a few months later we offered to foster a dog for them because they were full. They chose Chopper for us. He was 9 months old. He had been bought from a pet shop as a pure bred Staffordshire Bull Terrier (buyer beware!!!) and then surrendered to them when he was just 6 months old because the owners were moving house. (So they say anyway. To this day I believe it was because Chopper was such a destructive pain in the ass!) He wasn’t coping well living in kennels as he was really high energy, so we took him home and he went about worming his way into our hearts. It wasn’t long before we decided to keep him. He was destructive, hectic, anti-social and generally really irritating, but he was funny too and he was bursting out of his skin with eagerness to learn.
Foster Failure #2: It took a few years to calm the beast but when we finally had harmony I suggested to Dave that we try fostering again. I assured him we wouldn’t end up with a fourth dog. Handsome Eddie came and went. Sam the Samoyed came and went. Trixie the Amstaff came and… stayed! Foster number four was foster failure number two. Needless to say I’m not allowed to foster any more!!
Rambo: Angel thinks she’s in the army: She likes to drop one shoulder and do a commando roll and then jump up and look around to see if anyone was watching!
Comedian: Chopper can clear a room with his farts: Once he walked into my office, sat down beside me, farted, then smiled at me and started wagging his tail! Apparently farts are funny!
Minx: Trixie’s the other woman: She absolutely adores Dave. She flirts with him and gives him kisses and looks at him like he’s the only person in the room. I often find them spooning in the bed together!
