R.O.A.R. Squad: April and Glen and their dogs, Lobo and Willy, and their cat, Seemi

A very warm welcome to our latest R.O.A.R. Squad members from Arizona: April and Glen!

April is an artist and, in her own words, “I paint people’s pets for a living. What a cool job!” Yes, that sounds like an incredibly cool job!

A special shout out to the fabulous folks in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nunavut, and Idaho. These are the last states, provinces and territories we need-  we really need you!

Rockin’ Rescue Owners: April Howland & husband Glen Reiner

Gorgeous Pets: Seemi the cat, Lobo (golden mix), Willy (one eyed Chi)

Love at First Sight: Glen is a Registered Nurse here in AZ. He is a born native of Phoenix and has lived here all his life. We both are natives. I grew up in Sedona and loved every minute of it! We met in our early 30’s and fell in love instantly. I have a 13 year old son who is a great kid and Glen is the best step-dad I could have ever hoped for.

Howland Studios: I started drawing when I was 4 and have a degree in Graphic Design. Glen was instrumental in the start of Howland Studios. He recognized my passion, which was a hobby then, and gently pushed me into starting my business. Now I paint people’s pets for a living. What a cool job! We are also huge supporters of animal rescue here in AZ. Howland Studios donates art every year to help raise money for animal rescue awareness. Howland Studios was just interviewed on our ABC channel by Friends of Animal Care and Control during the Wags and Whiskers Wish Drive that helped raise 60K for our shelters!

Seemi is a 8 year old ferel cat who is now fairly tame

Lobo, golden retriever/shepherd mix is our first rescue dog who came with a very sad story. He was almost beaten and starved to death and it took him months to trust us. He is a happy and healthy dog today of 7 years (we think). Lobo came to us through the Arizona Golden Retriever Connection.

Willy is our one eyed Chihuahua we adopted a year ago. We believe he is about 3. We think he was dumped by his previous family and then picked up by Maricopa Animal Control. Willy was scheduled to be euthanized until our SPCA found him. They took him to their shelter, removed his infected eye and then we found each other a month later at a charity event. Willy came to us from Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA.

Inside Where it’s Cozy: Seemi who was born an outside cat spent years staying away from an open door after we took him in. It was like he was telling us I don’t EVER want to go back out there. Now he is a bit more brave but he is strictly an indoor cat.

7 Year Old Puppy: Lobo is a goofball. Even though he is 7-8 years old he acts like a puppy when he gets excited. He is one of the fastest running dogs I have ever seen at the dogpark. He almost kept up with a greyhound once. He is a bit territorial over Mom and we have had to work on that. Our feeling is he finally feels connected and safe and doesn’t much want to share that so it has taken some time for him and Willy to work that out.

One Eye But Twice the Heart: Willy is amazing with his one eye antics. He turns his head to the side when he goes out the doggie door so he can see it. He sometimes misjudges the height of the couch and misses. Once in awhile he forgets about the walls and when we go for walks he has to be on the right side of Lobo so he doesn’t keep running into him. He is Daddy’s dog for sure since every night before bedtime, Willy has to groom his bald head.

Ok so I looked at the Chi and thought “that must be One Eyed Willy” and then realized how bad that was….

  3. Heather says:

So sorry to hear about your dogs’ tough beginnings, but so happy they made it into your life. They sound amazing and your cat is just beautiful. Welcome to the squad!

  4. I love that you took a chance on pooches that may have been overlooked. And I do love Willy’s perpetual wink.
